Kat Von D Spellbinding Eyeshadow Book for Holiday 2013 Review/Swatches!

Get ready for a swatch fest! I have been so excited for this palette for months now, and it's finally here. It's also exciting because Kat Von D products seem to be my most requested reviews - I've been a huge fan of Kat Von D in general for years, and instantly fell in love with her makeup line when it first came out. Since then I've reviewed a ton of her stuff on my YouTube channel, and now whenever something new comes out I get tons of people asking about it. I am flattered to be a go-to person for KVD info!
I'll start with the packaging. The palette comes in a white box that has some of Kat's beautiful artwork on it - a pretty girl with filigree, skulls, the works. The back of the box shows all the colors/names in an artsy frame:
The palette itself has the same artwork as the front of the box, but it is black instead of white:
The back of it shows all the colors and names, along with a little information - that the shades in the palette are all grouped in twos of colors that go well together so that you can create layered looks with them. This is especially handy for beginners, as it takes the guesswork out of what is going to go together and look good. Of course, you can create unlimited looks using all the shadows in different ways - this just gives you suggestions and is also helpful when you're in a hurry!
This is the 4th year that Kat Von D has released a holiday palette, and each year they get sleeker/less bulky. The first year was The Tattoo Chronicles, and while it had a great selection of products inside (shadows, primers, lashes, etc.) it was suuuuper big and bulky. The second year brought the Candelabra palette and it was a bit thinner but still looked like a book. That one was more simplified down to just eyeshadows and a mascara. Last years' was the Starry Eyes palette, which seemed to be everyone's favorite by far because it was finally a nice sleek, simpler palette. It had 4 of her trio shadows inside and also included 2 of her liquid lipsticks, which introduced me to how amazing those are. This year, it's just eyeshadow - 24 shades to be exact. There are 12 shades that you've seen before in previous palettes, and 12 that are brand new to this palette.
The inside of this palette is simple - no mirror, just a few looks you can do demonstrated on the inside cover.
The shadows have a plastic overlay that has all the color names, which is pretty convenient but can be a pain in the butt because it's not removable and can get in the way while you're using it.

The easiest way I found to do this was to photograph them in groups of fours, so let's get started!

Dark Throne - matte, dark grey
Precious - shimmery pink-toned champagne
Sunset Blvd - yellow-gold with gold glitter
8 Bit - turquoise satin finish
Precious and Sunset Blvd are both from the Candelabra holiday palette. Dark Throne and 8-Bit are both new to this palette. 8-Bit is an awesome mermaid-type color!

Holy Bible - light silver
Oddfellow - matte black with green & blue glitter that shifts to purple & pink glitter
Instaglam - shimmery pale pink
Stupid Autocorrect - shimmery rose
Holy Bible can be found in the Candelabra holiday palette, Love and Fury (Adora) palette, and the Sinner palette. Oddfellow can be found in the Candelabra holiday palette and Love and Fury palette, but this one seems to be different - the old one was just green and blue glitter, I don't notice a color shift in the glitter of the old formula - while the glitter in this one looks green and blue, but shifts to pink and purple in different light - gorgeous!! Instaglam and Stupid Autocorrect are new to this palette.

Smile Now - peach with pink duochrome
Cry Later - matte brown with pink & gold glitter
Queen - red-toned brown with green shift
Bukowski - shimmery bright teal
Bukowski can be found in the Angeles palette. Smile Now, Cry Later, and Queen are all new to this palette. Smile now is a pretty awesomely unique shade. Queen is on the same idea as Stryker from the Gypsy palette, but Queen is much more red-toned.

Babe - iridescent bright purple
Piaf - steel grey
Geek - matte pale peach
Fallen - rich shimmery gold
Babe can be found in the Poetica palette and True Love Palette. Fallen can be found in the Starstruck mini-palette. Piaf and Geek are both new to this palette.
Birdcage - shimmery lime green
Gunner - matte olive green with turquoise and green glitter
Galore - shimmery champagne
Hexagram - shimmery brown with a green shift
Birdcage and Gunner can both be found in the Gypsy palette - I know that one is a pretty sought-after palette, so if you missed out then 2 of the greens are included in this one! Hexagram is new to this palette.

Arcadia - shimmery lilac
Wonderland - Dark purple with pink & purple glitter
Countess - matte cream
WTF - shimmery berry red
Wonderland can be found in the Poetica palette. WTF can be found in the Candelabra holiday palette. Arcadia and Countess are new to this palette. I am very happy they included Countess - I always use a matte cream as my brow highlight/to blend out harsh edges, and not many palette include a color like that. With this, I feel like I have everything I need, rather than having to grab for an extra eyeshadow to complete my look.

All in all, I am super happy with this palette and definitely recommend it. If you stayed away from the previous holiday palettes due to the bulky packaging, that is nothing to worry about with this one - it's no larger than the Disney palettes, and much thinner!

Hope you guys enjoyed this review, here is the video I made to show the shadows in action:

  4. This looks nice! I think I'll pick this up for sure because the only other KVD shadows I have is the Little Saint four shadow palette so this is a nice spread of her shadows! Oddfellow, Queen and Wonderland are the knockouts for me :)
